Purification of Lanthanides and Influence of Impurities on Magnetic Properties of REPd2X3 Compounds

We present initial results of investigation of influence of impurities on magnetic properties of lanthanides intermetallic compounds. We study impurity effect on the REPd2T3 hexagonal compounds which are interesting for various types of magnetic ordering and other effects such as heavy-fermion behavior. In the first stage we studied Pr compounds, which are reported to be nonmagnetic due to crystal electric field (CEF) effect. In this paper we report technological questions of refinement of commercial lanthanides with purity grade 3N using Solid State Electrotransport (SSE). We present methodology of chemical analysis of refined lanthanides by Inductive Coupled Plasma with Mass Spectrometer (ICP MS) technique. Preparation of single crystals of intermetallic compounds prepared from refined and commercial lanthanides is presented. First result of magnetic measurements for PrPd2Al3 and PrPd2Ga3 are presented.
